I can’t remember exactly when it was when my babes started to realize that there was a wide wonderful world outside the cocoon their mama and papa had created for them, but what I do remember was thinking how amazing it was that they were seeing things for the very first time. A plane, a bird, an ant, rocks, sand, grass, water,...it was magical. Not only were they seeing those things, but they were experiencing them through their other senses too: the sound of a plane and birds, the feel of rocks and sand in their little fists, the tickle of grass and the sensation of water running between their fingers. It occurred to me then, most intensely than ever before, how important it is to be selective about what children are exposed to.
